Congressional candidate talks to voters in Meridian

MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) – The upcoming race to fill Rep. Gregg Harper’s congressional seat is starting to thicken. One of the candidates vying for the position made a stop by the Queen City Thursday to talk about his future plans.

Michael Guest is making the rounds through Mississippi right now, meeting constituents and talking voter issues. Guest is the district attorney for Madison and Rankin counties. He hopes to put his law experience to work in Congress, tackling big issues in the state like infrastructure and opioid abuse.

Michael Guest announces candidacy for Congress in Meridian

Michael Guest, the District Attorney for Madison and Rankin Counties, was in Meridian Thursday to announce his candidacy for Congress in Mississippi’s Third Congressional District, the post held by U.S. Rep. Gregg Harper (R-Miss.), who is not seeking re-election.

Guest, 47, a Republican, said in his speech that he is a proponent of limited government, traditional Mississippi values, lower taxes, fewer regulations, the right to life, a strong national defense and the Second Amendment.

A Mississippi prosecutor says he is running for Congress because he believes in safe communities, limited government and “traditional family values.”

BRANDON, Miss. (AP) — A Mississippi prosecutor said Thursday that he is running for Congress because he believes in safe communities, limited government and “traditional family values.”

Michael Guest spoke to more than 200 people in his hometown of Brandon. The crowd in the Rankin County circuit courtroom included more than three dozen uniformed law enforcement officers.

Unexpected vacancy quickly draws first candidate in race for Harper’s seat

A little more than 24 hours after shoo-in incumbent Rep. Gregg Harper announced he would not run for re-election this year, the first candidate to replace him qualified for the seat.

Michael Guest, a Brandon native who has served as district attorney for Madison and Rankin counties since 2008, qualified Friday afternoon to run for Mississippi’s third congressional district.
